Marina Barrage Singapore

When I was growing up in Malaysia, I used to hear from people and also Singapore soap operas and movies that Singapore girls always look for the 5 C's:

Cash

Condo

Car

Credit card

Certificate

After staying in Singapore for around 1 year 7 months, I found out who the culprit behind the Singaporean girls craving for Cs! And he is none other than the Cingapore Government... oh.. sorry.. Singapore Government. (I think they change it to S to make it not so C! - Don't believe this)

Why? because the government has another C and that is.. Clever!

The Marina Barrage

What's a barrage?

It is an artificial obstruction in a watercourse to increase the depth of the water, facilitate irrigation, etc. (According to www.dictionary.com)

But the Marina Barrage, is a combination of
1. Water supply
2. Flood control
3. Lifestyle attraction

It's normal to see a barrage or a dam to supply water and control flood but how many of them will become an attraction to normal people?!!!

The Singapore government turned it not just into a tourist site but also an attraction to the locals!

Come on.. in which part of the world, are they gonna build a barrage or a dam with a shopping mall, restaurant, cafe...

decorate it with some

water pumps,

grass on roof...

with environmental friendly energy usage,

such as solar plates

and nuclear reactor

(ok.. don't believe this one!)

It's definitely worth going to relax yourself from all the stress that Singapore is giving you!

************************************************************************************

Enough analysis on trends.

Honestly, life is not so easy for international students. We left all our hometown lifestyle, home country lifestyle, family, friends, to come to a new country which we are not so used to. It is tough in every single aspect - physical, social, financial, mental, etc.

However, it doesn't mean we got to keep it to ourselves. When you are stress, share with people. When you have no money, there's always a way (Econs prove that everyone will get a job!). Share with good people who will help you out. Get to know more locals. Don't stick to your nationality gang oni..

Of course it's easier said than done. So, if you still wanna commit suicide, do call me, I wanna take photo of your act and blog about it!

There are some ways to commit suicide according to How To Kill Yourself Like A Man. (click)

After browsing through the internet, I like this one the most..

Hopscotch your way to death!
(Photo from uncyclopedia)

But still... I chicken out... so i'm still alive.

Stabbing and Suicide in NTU

Incident: A student stabbed a professor and committed suicide

Date: 2nd March 2009

Time: 10.35am

Venue:
School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

Name and detail of student:
David Hartanto Widjaja, Indonesian, 21 years old, final year student of EEE.

Name and detail of professor:
Chan Kap Luk, EEE professor.

Relationship between student and professor:
Mr Chan is the final year project supervisor of David.

Weapon used: 10cm knife

Cause of incidents: Not known yet.

**********************************************************************

Finally, all the news broadcasting is over. So, as it was mentioned above, an NTU student stabbed a professor and committed suicide there after. The reason of David's action was not known yet but investigation is still going on.

The NTU community and also the whole of Singapore are quite shocked by the incident. Nothing like that has ever happened in NTU. It's like Virginia Tech of the east.

...Just that a knife was used instead. Photo from http://www.mediacritiques.com/

So, what can we learn from here?

For professors:

My SPECULATION is, David tried to kill the professor because the professor gave him a hard time in his final year project (FYP). Students don't hand in their FYP report in February, chances are he won't know his grade. However, the profesor must have said something that made David felt intimidated or insecured of his results. Thus, decided to take actions.

Eg.
Prof:
you! stupid dog! like this oso duno! How do u expect me to help u. Simple thing u learn in high school, my little gal also know.

or

Prof:
You sure fail d la! Your project can't be salvage d. You sure retain d. Your project gone case. If I give you fail, it's very good d, coz it's worst than fail

or

Prof:
You're a good student, been scoring A+ in most of your courses and still maintains a CGPA 5.0/5.0 at this stage. But unfortunately, your projects seems like, the most you can get is just a A-, which will pull your CGPA down.

or the ultimate one,

Prof:
Mister! u C2pig a! lu ane kuang, plojet sure fail one! Lu no blain. c2pig, c oledi kno u luk like 2 pig! Now, u, no choie(choice)! lu either pay me S$9999 or u get F in ur plojet! Lu pay money, we no talk. Lu no pay money, I tok ur A, tok ur deglee Ah!

What can I say... professors, don't act like you have the whole world under you. I know that most professors are not proud but all professors will have a certain level of pride that some students cannot take. So, be careful with the way you treat your students, because if u don't, THEY WILL TOK YOUR HANDS AND LEGS!!! (Tok - "chop") Don't think that students are easy to bully! You might be good in your field, but students are good in many fields that you don't, such as TOK YOUR HANDS AND LEGS!!!

For students:

If you feel that you wanna TOK your professors hands and legs, make sure you think twice. You are in freaking Majulah Singapura! Once you tok, you can't hide! Unless you are Mr Mas Selamat, which is still in hiding after 1 year or drinking bear in Negaraku Malaysia! (Negaraku - "my country" in Malay)

Unless you are as smart as him and have so many looks. Photo from http://aendirect.com/

Don't crazily TOK your prof over some stupid grades!

If you're a science freak, there is no FREAKING SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL that shows good grades equals financial security and financial freedom!

If you're an art student, go talk arty-farty to some of your friends.

If you're a business student, forget about the prof and start your own business!

If you're a slacker, you won't get stressed, coz a slacker normally won't get good grades.

Good grades =/= Good money
Good grades =/= Good life

BUT
Financial knowledge + willingness to take action = Good money + Good life.

If you're a science freak, make sure you get the above equation correct for your life!

Enjoy life! Live life to the fullest!

Don't jump down from a few stories tall building, jump down from Burj Dubai.

Photo from www.motherjones.com

coz you get to enjoy the air-ie feeling for at least about 13 seconds (after some simple physics calculation). 8 stories is only 3 seconds max. At least your last 13 seconds are more meaningful, jumping off the tallest building in the world.

Jurong Birdpark Singapore

On Thursday (26th Feb 2009), I hopped to the Jurong Birdpark in Singapore!!

How to get there?
Go to Boonlay Interchange and take bus 194 or 251. I took 251 though. Need to walk around 200m to reach the birdpark entrance.

This bus stop looks nice.

Without hesitant, I let the worker teared my ticket. She said the show at the amphitheater will start soon. But it wasn't soon enough, so, I went to the penguin expedition

Guess who I saw in the penguin room....

I saw Mumble! from the movie Happy Feet! in the picture I mean. Don't they look alike..

Photo from http://www.moviewallpapers.net/

These are the emperor penguins in the penguin room.

One emperor penguin swimming in the water. They are really nice when they are underwater! Just like in Happy Feet!

This is one funny penguin. Honestly, I don't understand what it's doing.

Well, the entertainment from that funny penguin was enough to kill the time needed to wait for the show at the amphitheater to start.

This is the host with a hornbill. It's my first time witnessing a hornbill. It's big, especially the beak.

The show started off with a herd of flamingos walking out to the stage.

Those are small little flamingos. The grey colour ones. They turn white and pink as they grow older. Well, some Singaporeans will be so happy if they turn ang moh as they grow older. Especially Dawn Yang and Xiaxue!

Next, some parrots!

These 2 colorful parrots were playing basketball, picking up the balls by their beak.

Then, the parrots performed by flying around the amphitheater, flying through one loop to another.

There was this green parrot, called Amigo! Watch the video below to see what it can do.

Other than counting in English, it can also count in mandarin and sing "Rasa Sayang", "客人来", and Happy Birthday. Some of you don't even know how to sing those songs. Better buck up, or a parrot will take over your place.

Before the show ends, many more parrots appeared and we were allowed to take photos of the parrots while they were busy eating.

After that, I went to the World of Darkness.

There were quite a number of owls inside. But the problem is my digital camera works badly for night scenes. Most of the photos didn't show a lot of things as it was so dark inside that I couldn't even see anything in front.

But I still manage to snap a photo of this owl... which looks like..

Now, I know where judges get the inspiration of wearing that weird wig. Photo from http://sparklepony.blogspot.com/

Tram ride. Brought me around the birdpark. Cost: S$5

Took photo with parrots. I got to hold one.

Not far from the tram station, I saw this eagle statue..

It reminds me of this statue below...

This is the famous eagle statue of Langkawi Island in Malaysia.

Singapore saying to Malaysia:
Don't think that you have an eagle statue, you can be proud meh, I have one too. Some more, mine have much more white color than yours!!!

The flamingo lake was nearby.

Could you see all the pinkish-white spots all over the place? Nice, right? It's like a beauty pageant, with all the beauty queens standing beside the pool.

Believe it or not, couples can take their wedding photos here with the flamingos!

Yeaa.. they were all standing one one leg. According to physics, the pressure must be very high at the foot!

At the wetland, there was this bird, standing still with its wings spread open, drying itself.

I can't remember what it's called.

Saw this nice balcony near the pelican cove. Nice place for wedding photo-taking indeed.

While I was at the pelican cove, I saw this white color thingie on the tree...

...and this pelican was on the tree, whereas the others are all down there at the lake. I didn't know that pelicans stay on the trees!

If you still don't know what's a pelican, it's the bird with big mouth that can contain a lot of fish and water in its mouth.

I was waiting for these 2 swans to use their necks to form the famous valentines' day heart.

But this was the best shot I got!

Not bad wadd.. Close.. close.. Quick! Clap for me!

At least I got 2 parrots making the heart shape! This is new ok, most of the time parrots represents intelligence. But in this pic, it shows love, ok! Special photo!

This is a very arty-farty photo! There are 2 birds in the photo. One is trying to get out of the cage (parrot) and the other is trying to enter the cage (outside bird).

I got these photos from Parrot Paradise in the birdpark.

The Jurong Birdpark has this Waterfall Aviary, which is a huge (x10^99) bird cage...

.. with this guy guarding the entrance. Well, he seems like he's from the Night Safari! Just that this one is more disciplined, like

One black, one white. One yellow, one red. One spear, one gun. But they are more or less the same. Photo from www.pinknews.co.uk

mmm.. now I understand where the British palace guards get their uniform inspiration from!!!

The soldiers below sure have a good sense of dressing!

They have missiles protruding from their chests! Maybe they are actually robots.. like mechwarriors.

This is really one funny bird. If you in-laws are like that, my thought is, they desended from Bee-eaters! So, what can I say.. change your species!

Animals used to be hunted and their heads as decoration.

Photo from http://www.cartoonstock.com

But nowadays...

...birds' head are hunted to put at the end of the bridge!

Why did I say the waterfall aviary is a huge cage???

...it has the WORLD TALLEST MAN-MADE WATERFALL!!!!

Every record set by Singapore, it's all man-made!

In another aviary called Lory Loft, visitors are allowed to feed the birds with food bought at the entrance of the aviary.

Someone feed a parrot.

But they just don't have enough...

The jug contains the food sold to visitors. And the parrots are trying to get from the source!

The comparison between a chicken egg and an ostrich egg.

My suggestion, if you're in a hurry, fry an ostrich egg instead of chicken egg. You just need to eat the ostrich egg alone and you're full already!

This ad says, I tried so hard to produce Pepsi! Make sure you drink it!

Some national geographic knowledge: This is a called the casowary. It has a helmet on its head! They run very fast, that's why they need one. If birds are so clever.. knows that they should wear helmet, you human beings, being the most complex living creature on earth, should know better to wear a helmet!

This is the lengzai bird on the United States of America's emblem.

This is a crowned pigeon. Nice, right? It is bigger than a chicken!

The kingfisher! Used to like kingfishers because they look good and are good at catching fish.

This is the scarlet iblis! Iblis means devil in Islam

I don't know why is there a cock in the scarlet iblises cage. Maybe they wanna cross breed. Imagine next time, your chicken has long beak, red feathers and stand on one leg.

The last cage I went to was the Southeast Asian Birds. That was where I saw the peacocks!

These 2 male peacocks are actually fighting agaist one another. Just like when you park your car close to a peacock, later you'll get your car scratch because these silly birds just don't stop fighting against one another.

It was the last place already, so I decided to have some fun...

...chasing after some crowned pigeons!

Just after I left that cage, it started to rain...

I exited the birdpark while it was still raining.

Saw some ducks having fun in the rain...

... while I was trapped outside at the Bongo Burgers waiting for the rain to stop.
